There’s nothing quite as comfortably and cool, as a stylish denim jacket. But even the most beloved and dependable garments can use an upgrade now and again. Whether your favorite jean jacket has gotten a little worse for wear over the years, or you’re looking to spruce it up with a unique touch, these DIY styling tips will help you give it a fresh face.
Add some lace
Adding some lace is an easy way to add some femininity to a denim jacket. Lace comes in an array of styles, from intricate antique patterns to more mid-century Bohemian varieties. You can also select from a range of colors: white is especially complementary with denim; but red, yellow and pink look great as well. Sew some onto the breast pockets for a cute accent or overlay the back of the jacket, or both!
Add patches
Patches are akin to bumper stickers in that they can carry quite a bit of meaning in a small package. Depending on your personal style, you can select patches with clever slogans or positive messages, or ones emblazoned with the logo of your favorite band. If you prefer a more subtle look, there are many others to choose from, ranging from floral patterns, to dinosaurs.
Add leather cuffs or collar
Adding a bit of leather (or vegan leather) is a super easy way to spice up your denim. Brit and Co. outlines an easy way to add some leather cuffs to jeans in just five steps; and the same method can be applied to the cuffs of your jacket, or to the collar. This option can even be combined with the lace for a feminine bad girl motif. Pair it with some motorcycle boots and you’ll be ready to roll.
Bedazzle
Remember how much fun you had as a kid, bedazzling everything from jeans to sweatshirts and teddy bears? Although some ‘90s trends are best left to the past, bedazzling is one deserving of revival. Whether rhinestones or pearls are more your taste, it’s an easy and fun way to revamp a jacket in a way that’s uniquely you. If you’re looking for a more uptown look, try incorporating some old brooches or earrings into the mix. Embellishments look especially fetching on collars or on the breast pocket.
Paint it
Fashionista blogger of Emer Ja Design demonstrated the wicked cool technique of painting jeans in a color-block pattern. Though this one requires a bit of courage, you don’t have to be an artist to make it work. All it requires is some creativity and the right supplies. While she’s taken her brush to a pair of skinny jeans, you can easily apply the same technique to a denim jacket, brushing a few strokes of color onto the back or sleeves. If the color block look isn’t your thing, you can also try painting on patterns like tribal prints or polka dots.
